YCFL Recycling Bins Project

YCFL received donations from LG Electronics USA for the recycling bins program

The Youth Council of Fort Lee (YCFL) is a NJ-registered 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that consists of incoming 9th graders and high school students residing in Bergen County. The YCFL comes together with the common goal of spurring a positive change in the Fort Lee area by helping to make our community even better than it already is. As engaged and deeply committed volunteers, YCFL members have the opportunity to discuss town issues and participate in community events and activities while they hone their leadership skills. YCFL members recognize how important service is to America’s overall success and identity and hope that their work inspires all who are looking to get involved, serve, and initiate positive change in their respective communities.

The YCFL, along with the Borough of Fort Lee and Fort Lee Environmental Committee, hosted a Climate Change Awareness event, Clima-Con, at the Fort Lee Community Center on Saturday, April 14, 2018, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The YCFL planned on implementing a recycling bin program throughout Fort Lee with the proceeds from the fundraisers and donations. Even though it proved a successful event with many students and residents of Bergen County turning out for it, enough funds were not raised for the plan to be implemented. This was not entirely surprising given that Clima-Con was the first full-scale YCFL event.

Still, YCFL members were not willing to abandon their initial plan. Thus, they adjusted their game plan and shifted their focus toward securing potential donors. Hearing about the YCFL cause, the Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Relations team at LG Electronics USA contacted the YCFL. A highly productive meeting took place at the end of August 2018.

After the meeting, the YCFL received a donation from LG Electronics USA for the recycling bin program. The YCFL and Borough of Fort Lee ordered custom-designed recycling bins with the funds and will place them in busy public spaces – Fort Lee Public Library, Fort Lee High School, Community Center, and Main Street area to remind people to recycle. We must not lose sight of the impact that climate-change is having on our world. Clima-Con may be over, but climate-change awareness is not. Together, we can make a real difference.
